TV Lifts Don’t Have to Go All the Way

Are you planning a TV lift project? We have plenty of different models to fit TVs from sub-compact size to monster big screens. You can see in-depth diagrams for every model we carry on our website. This makes it easy to tell which lift is right for your project. As you check the measurements, you should be aware that our lifts are designed to make customization easy. For example, you get to decide how far the lift travels. This can be helpful when:

  • You are working in a really tight spot that won’t accommodate the lift’s full extension. That might be the case with a popup or dropdown lift installed for viewing between the bottom edge of a kitchen cabinet and the countertop.
  • Letting the TV travel the full height of the lift wouldn’t put it at just the right viewing position. Sometimes, just a few inches can make a big difference.
  • You’re using a TV that’s at the small end of the size range for the weight capacity of the lift. So, you don’t want the lift column to show beneath the lower edge of the flat screen when the TV is in view.

We’ve got good news for you: The extension distance on all our Nexus 21 TV lifts can be adjusted using the height limit controller that comes with your lift!

The Ups and Downs of TV Lift Decor Part 1

Have you considered how a TV lift will affect your room’s décor when it is in the up position? It’s possible to design and decorate a room that contains a TV lift so that all of the design elements look harmonious regardless of whether the TV is up or down. This takes a little forethought and experimentation. In this series, we’ll explore some dos and don’ts. Here’s the first tip:

  • Don’t place a piece of artwork directly behind where your TV pops up – unless your TV is larger than the artwork. You don’t want part of a frame or a few inches of painted canvas poking out above the top of your TV during viewing.
  • Do consider hanging a panoramic print of some kind higher on the wall so it will still be fully visible with the TV in the up position. Then, place vertically oriented pictures or decorative sconces on the two adjoining walls to create a sense of balance.panoramic artwork

Seating for Home Entertainment

From the always entertaining blog over at screenpainthd.com comes a blockbuster post on home theater seating options. You’ll enjoy browsing both traditional and really upscale options complete with photos. One of the quirkier seating choices is the set of rock pillows. These are more comfortable than they sound. Imagine a set of bean bags in a variety of shapes and colors that resemble stones smoothed by decades of tumbling in a river. Throw these plump pebbles on the floor when your kids have a sleepover and they’ll have fun creating impromptu seating arrangements that are ideal for watching TV and playing video games into the wee hours. These cushions are also perfect for watching TV if you have a popup flat screen on one of our swivel TV lifts. You can easily rearrange the pillows anywhere in a room to create your ideal vantage point.

Celebrating Cherry TV Lift Furniture

cherry blossom

Did you know that 2012 marks the 100 year anniversary of Japan’s beautiful gift of 3000 cherry trees to our nation’s capital? These trees have been blooming through March and April for a century, filling Washington, D.C. with their fragrance. In honor of the centennial celebration of the National Cherry Blossom Festival, we’re taking a look at cherry TV lift cabinets! Here are 3 we think you’ll agree are quite lovely.

Black Cherry

Here’s a gorgeous, luxurious black cherry TV lift cabinet with gold leaf trim molding from Nicholas Anthony Custom woodwork. It’s got one of our Nexus 21 swivel lifts installed so the TV can be turned to face in any direction. That’s important on a cabinet that’s designed to be a room’s centerpiece. We bet the back of this piece of furniture is just as nicely finished as the front.

Solid Cherry

This is a custom TV lift cabinet project from our partners at Precision Built, LLC. The three drawers on this solid cherry wood media center aren’t for show. They actually do open and close – showing you what a slim profile our lift has and how little space it takes up inside the cabinet. Precision Built enjoyed the simple installation process and their customer is thrilled with the outcome.

Cherry Stained

You don’t have to actually chop down a cherry tree to get the look of cherry furniture. We’ve got a very cost-effective option in our Classic TV Lift Cabinet Collection. The Beaumont Series cabinets are crafted out of alder (a rapidly renewable hardwood) that is hand finished to look like cherry. Yours will arrive with the swivel TV lift already installed. All you have to do is mount your flat screen on the lift and plug it in. You can be watching your favorite program in minutes!

Check Out This Bookcase TV Lift Cabinet

If you liked our recent post about TV lift furniture that serves a dual purpose, you’ll appreciate this project posted on YouTube by Schrocks Custom Woodworking. It actually has an interesting back story. The homeowner had an old fashioned rear projection TV placed in this spot originally. They wanted the entertainment area turned into a built in bookcase. That’s a great choice for right next to the fireplace. It makes the living room look cozy and retro – a place to curl up on a winter’s night with a favorite book. At the same time, the homeowner didn’t want to eliminate the modern entertainment function of the room. So, they chose a popup lift for inside the bookcase. That’s a good example of how to use a hidden, automated lift to create two entirely different looks for a room depending on whether you want to watch TV or not.

Are you wondering how the TV lift gets into the bookcase? This earlier video shows how the front of the bookcase was built separately and the lift installed before the entire piece was attached to the wall shelving unit. You even get to peek down inside the hidden compartment to see how all the components are arranged. If you’re planning on doing a similar project, it gives you a good idea of how to stage the work so installing the lift is as easy as possible. Putting it in when you still have 360 degree access to the compartment is a very smart idea.

This is one project where a hinged lid actually enhances the finished look of the lift. It flips back to neatly cover up the bottom row of books, creating a clean canvas around the TV screen. From a distance, the seam in the closed lid is virtually invisible. We think it’s a wonderful job!tv lift in bookcase

Shoppe for a Custom TV Lift Cabinet

This week’s partner highlight post features The Custom Shoppe in Wisconsin. They turned to Nexus 21 when they could no longer get the lifts they used to install in the past. Think for a moment about what that means for the customers who had those old lifts. If the manufacturer is out of business, customers will get no warranty support. That’s just one more reason to do business with a company that’s here to stay!

Here’s what The Custom Shoppe says about one of our most popular lift models:

“The L-39 TV Lift is an excellent choice for your flat panel TV. Utilizing Nexus 21′s superior LIFT COLUMN TECHNOLOGY, this model accommodates screen sizes up to 55″ (can handle up to 120 lbs total TV). Even though this lift has a compact profile (only 30.2″ high when retracted), it has a tall extension and is super smooth, ultra quiet, and only takes 25 seconds to fully extend!” To see the full technical specifications for the L-39, go here.

We’re proud to be in business with another American company. All Custom Shoppe furniture is crafted per your specifications, making each piece unique. Like their website says: “This is America’s Heartland where solid wood is combined with solid values.”Custom cabinet

When You Need a Lift After Watching TV…

At Nexus 21, we’re always on the lookout for ways to enhance customers’ TV viewing experience. Here’s a new form of home automation that fits the bill. Sure, we call a recliner a “La-Z-Boy” because we sometimes feel lazy while watching TV. But for some people, it’s not laziness that keeps them sitting in front of the tube for too long. For individuals with mobility issues, it’s often difficult or downright painful to try to struggle out of a comfortably cushioned recliner. These customers need more than a lift
for their TV – they need one for themselves as well.

Fortunately, there are furniture designers out there who have created a type of recliner especially for TV viewers coping with arthritis, MS, and other chronic conditions that interfere with mobility. These motorized recliners have a “lift & rise” function that launches the sitter gently upward and forward to make getting up easier. Push one button on your remote to lower your TV back into its cabinet. Push a button on your chair, and have it lift you into a standing position – sounds like a perfect match for our older customers!lift & rise chair

Vertical vs. Horizontal TV Lifts Part 3

In the final post of this series, we’ll be looking at one of the more complex horizontal TV automation systems. This kind moves on a track along a chain. The chain is flexible so it can be straight or curved. Some of the fancier installations actually move the TV around in a full circle. The TV screen itself can be swiveled so that it lies flat against the wall. This type of lift system was originally only available in a manual version but is now offered in a motorized model as well (for an admittedly steep upcharge).

Like the slide out lift we looked at earlier in the series, this concept might have a place in commercial applications. Some of the architectural concepts involving multiple screens that are all rotated in different directions are interesting. But it’s kind of overkill for a home entertainment center. Besides, this kind of horizontal lift doesn’t really do what you need it to most – actually hide the TV out of sight. Having the TV slide over and hang against the wall isn’t really an improvement over a traditional wall mount. It’s still right there staring you in the face.

Technically, you could put a track-based system in a closet so the TV moves out into the bedroom when you want to view it. But that would involve making substantial changes to the door, frame and ceiling (not to mention eating up closet space). The track itself would still be visible on the ceiling – unlike our drop down lifts which are perfectly camouflaged. The only real way to conceal the track itself is to create some kind of drop ceiling. This means adding a track system after initial home construction can significantly increadrop down liftse installation costs. In contrast, a popup Nexus 21 system can be used with equal ease for a built-in project or added later in a TV lift cabinet.

No Room for a TV…

That’s the dilemma one designer faced in creating a media space and reading nook out of a room with 3 doors and a fireplace. Artisan Custom Bookcases rose to the challenge using a Nexus 21 TV lift. Take a look at this photo and see if you can guess where they put it. Isn’t it great they were able to fit in a full sized flat screen without blocking the view out the picture window?

This is a wonderful example of how using a TV lift can make a room fully multi-purpose without making it look cramped at all. When you match the right lift with the right size of flat screen, you can fit a TV in just about any room.

How to Install a TV Lift in 30 Minutes

Can a Nexus 21 TV lift really be installed in less than half an hour? According to “hiddentvguy” over at instructables.com, he’s done just that. The homeowner for this project wanted a TV lift but didn’t want to radically modify his furniture or buy a lift cabinet. No problem! Hiddentvguy simply installed one of our lifts on the back of an existing piece of furniture. Since our lifts have a super-low profile, it successfully hid the TV below the level of the living room windows. That’s quite a feat considering the windowsill was only 24” off the ground. This really is a quick fix if you want to hide a TV without making significant changes to your existing living room décor.

What fast and easy project have you done with our popup TV lifts? Do you have any special tips for making installation even simpler? Let us know in the comments.30 minute tv lift install
