You’ve decided to install a TV lift cabinet in your living room or bedroom. Now comes the next decision. Do you choose to buy a new cabinet, pick up an antique at a thrift shop or estate sale, repurpose an older cabinet of your own, or build one from scratch?
Many of our clients decide to build their own cabinets and have sent in amazing photos of their DIY projects. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of having a cabinet built vs building one yourself:
A custom-made cabinet is going to be ready to go as soon as it is delivered. You can have the lift professionally installed and there will be plenty of room for your TV and your additional devices. You don’t have to spend time demolishing inner shelves, stripping, sanding, and staining or painting. This is a great option if you want to make sure your cabinet is done right by an expert and don’t have the time or expertise to do it yourself.
A DIY cabinet can be made out of almost any piece of old furniture. Sourcing furniture can be a big part of the fun and finding that hidden gem at an antique store or garage sale is a great feeling. It will ensure your cabinet/lift system is completely unique and your piece will be a conversation starter with guests. Just keep in mind the cabinet must be stable and sturdy enough to handle the lift hardware and know what you’re getting into. If you’re the type of person that always has a project to work on or gadget to tinker with this may be the most rewarding and fun option for you.
Whether you’re building the cabinet yourself or purchasing a professionally made cabinet, we have plenty of options to choose from. Browse our lift mechanisms or our finished cabinets and start imagining how lifts can enhance your home today.
